Canada at a Glimpse

US/Canada Border

80% of the population of the country actually lives within 200 miles of the Canadian/US border stretching right across the southern border of the country coast to coast. This is advantageous for national market access as fewer distribution points are needed to address the east/west.

Although Canada is a single sovereign country it has 7 regions which make up the overall unique cultural mosaic of the people of Canada. Each region is somewhat culturally unique and is typically approached and covered differently. While Canada has two official languages, English and French, the French language spoken and written is referred to as Canadian French and is subtly unique from any other version of French. For instance Canadian French has its own specific QWERTY keyboard layout. The duality of the official languages has legal mandates as well… all labelling must be in both languages, as well as manuals. Collateral material and websites are not mandatory for dual language support but if the intention is to sell into the Franco-phone markets it is strongly advisable.

British Columbia

The Province of British Columbia is a magnificent panorama of majestic beauty and serenity.
The many mountain ranges that run through the province alone bring an extraordinary vista of nature and the coastal area provides the exquisite garden like existence that the Pacific regions are well known for.
The Mountain ranges historically cut BC off from the rest of Canada in the earliest stages of the country’s development and as such a very strong cultural bond and trading practice was formed with the NW USA and still thrives today. Shipping, logging, mining, fishing and the leisure industry combine to create one of the most buoyant economies in the country and a thriving IT industry.

Alberta

Alberta has long been the energy centre of Canada with its vast, as of yet, untapped oil reserves.
The province is a unique integration of agricultural and industrial as well as a thriving oil and gas mecca for the country.
The unique and innovative development that has occurred over the years continues to thrive and drive a nationally unprecedented source of income and wealth for a Western region province.
The IT sector in Alberta is robust and growing at a remarkable rate.

Manitoba & Saskatchewan

Manitoba and Saskatchewan have long been termed the “bread basket” of Canada. This pure prairie region has historically been among the most fertile and productive farming lands in the world.
Both provinces also host a huge freshwater fishing industry as well as mining and Potash which are bringing unprecedented revenues to this region.
The prairie provinces have been experiencing a significant population boom these past few years and as a result the IT markets are growing at an unprecedented rate.

Ontario & Quebec

Ontario has been termed the “Financial Engine” of Canada.
With a marvellously diverse economy, the province boasts all levels of all business pursuits, from farming to mining, to manufacturing to banking to being the financial hub of Canada.
Ontario is the single largest provincial economy in the country with a significant IT spend as a result.
It accounts for approximately 30% of the overall national spend alone.

Quebec is a province rich in historical relevance. It is the cradle of the French culture in Canada and one of its most vibrant economies.
Boasting one of the largest Hydro Electric infrastructures on the planet, its phenomenal agricultural core also produces some of the highest quality dairy products in the world.
A lucrative complex market based on all aspects of both primary and secondary industry. Quebec is a substantial portion of the national IT spend and has unique language and cultural requirements to participate successfully in this robust and lucrative economy.

The Maritimes

This series of 4 provinces that have been collected together were historically referred to as “The Maritimes”.
Its primary pursuits were originally centred around maritime life and of course fishing and shipping and ship making were all at the core of their local economy .
The oil industry has boomed of late, and farming and manufacturing as well as shipping now form the core of the modern economy in this exquisite part of Canada.
Recently huge development has been experienced with global companies establishing call centre’s in the region. Canada boasts one of the finest telecommunications industries in the world and the availability of the newest and most efficient telecom technologies infrastructure in place is on a parallel, if not superior to many other countries …

This technology coupled with affordable, well-educated local labour makes this region very attractive for globally focused call centres.
As this video has explained Canada is not a “one stop serves all” country. It is large, diverse and multicultural. The rewards are many in bringing your business to Canada but many organizations sadly have experienced significant challenges to quickly and efficiently setting up to execute in this special marketplace.
